‘That was really bad’: Pilot avoids collision with airport truck at Charlotte Douglas
An American Airlines pilot slammed on the brakes Wednesday morning at Charlotte’s airport to avoid hitting an airport truck that drove directly into the plane’s path.
“That was really bad,” the pilot said, according to air traffic control audio.
It occurred in a gate area adjacent to the terminal rather than on a taxiway or runway, according to a statement from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Officials reported no injuries or property damage, and airport operations continued without interruption.
“Safety and security remain top priorities at CLT, and this incident is being reviewed in accordance with established safety standards,” airport officials said.
The incident comes weeks after a fatal collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. On March 22, an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck, resulting in the deaths of two pilots and injuries to several others.
In the wake of Wednesday’s close call, American Airlines emphasized that ground safety procedures require all vehicles to yield to aircraft, particularly in active ramp and alleyway environments where visibility is often restricted.
“In this case, two vehicles associated with CLT did not yield to our aircraft taxiing from an alleyway, but our vigilant and professional crew took immediate action,” an American spokesperson said. “We appreciate that CLT Airport will be reviewing this.”
The airline also highlighted Federal Aviation Administration right-of-way protocols. Because cockpit windows offer a limited field of vision, it is often difficult or impossible for pilots to spot vehicles and people under the nose or behind the wings.
American Airlines noted that drivers should never assume a pilot can see them, especially in high-traffic areas such as aprons and ramps, where crews are occupied with critical preflight checks. The airline did not release further details about the specific flight involved.
