Overview
The 2026 Toyota bZ compact electric SUV fixes everything that bothered us about last year's model, and marks a turning point for Toyota's EV ambitions. The clumsy "bZ4X" name is shown the door, the powertrain is upgraded significantly, range improves to a maximum of 314 miles, thanks to a bigger battery, and the AWD models get a lot more power.
Still built on Toyota's e-TNGA platform, the bZ still seats five and offers FWD or AWD drivetrains, but its $35K starting price undercuts many rivals in this segment, making it a much more compelling proposition than before for eco-conscious families and efficiency-minded commuters who want a practical EV with Toyota reliability.
What's New for 2026?
The 2026 bZ gets a comprehensive mid-life overhaul, starting with its name, simplified from the previous bZ4X, but the under-the-skin changes are even more dramatic. There are styling updates too, with a brand-new fascia, slimmer LED DRLs, and a redesigned lower front bumper, now available with color-coded overfenders.
There's a new 74.4-kWh battery in all trims except the XLE FWD (which gets a 57.7-kWh battery), improving range by as much as 25%, and the onboard AC charger is upgraded to 11 kW. AWD models enjoy a 50% jump in power to 338 hp. Out goes the CCS charging port and in comes a NACS connector that gives the bZ access to the Tesla Supercharger network, and Toyota has also added steering-mounted regenerative braking paddles, Plug & Charge capability, silicon carbide motor inverters, and a battery preconditioning system that allows faster DC charging in cold weather.
On the subtly restyled dashboard, the touchscreen grows to 14 inches. The Toyota bZ's price starts almost $2K lower than last year.
Exterior
The 2026 restyle gives the bZ a more cohesive appearance and tones down some of the polarizing styling elements. The sleek hammerhead nose gets slim LED DRLs, and the grille panel is more cleanly styled. All exterior lighting features LED tech.
The redesigned overfenders can now be had in body color, not just black, and a ducktail rear spoiler is standard, while the Limited gets a split roof spoiler. The XLE rides on 18-inch alloys, but the Limited upgrades to machine-finished 20s, and there are color-coded door handles with touch-sensor locking and a kick-activated power liftgate.
Interior
The bZ's cabin has been improved, with a slimmed-down dashboard containing a seven-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration. The redesigned center console now houses four USB-C ports and dual Qi wireless charging pads. Adjustable 64-color ambient interior lighting spans the whole cabin.
The steering wheel and front seats are heated in all trims, and the Limited gets front-seat ventilation, heated rear seats, a camera-based digital rearview mirror, and a panoramic glass roof. The trunk accommodates 25.8-27.7 cu-ft of luggage, expanding to 55-56.9 cu-ft with the rear seat folded.
Price Range and Best Value Trim
The $37,900 XLE FWD Plus with the bigger battery provides the best balance of price, features, and 314-mile range.
Category | Trim | MSRP |

Range and Efficiency (MPGe / Electric Range)
The XLE FWD with the smaller 57.7-kWh battery returns an EPA-rated 144/117/130 MPGe city/highway/combined and a 236-mile range; with the 74.4-kWh battery, these change to 143/119/131 MPGe and 314 miles. The Limited returns 138/113/125 MPGe and 299 miles with FWD and 128/105/117 MPGe and 278 miles with AWD.
Charging
Every bZ has an NACS port and, therefore, access to Tesla's Supercharger network, as well as other public networks like ChargePoint, IONNA, and EVgo. DC fast charging at up to 150 kW will charge the battery from 10-80% in about half an hour. The new 11-kW onboard charger can charge the battery at Level 2 speed from 10-100% in about seven hours. You can use the included dual-voltage charging cable for top-offs at home. Public charging sessions are simplified by Plug & Charge capability, automating payment once you're enrolled through the Toyota app.
Performance and 0 to 60 MPH
The 168-hp FWD models accelerate to 60 mph in a claimed eight seconds, and the 221-hp versions should take around 6.5 seconds. The 338-hp AWD models should be good for around 4.4-4.8 seconds. The AWD models provide real punch and effortless merging and overtaking, while the regenerative braking paddles let you dial in your preferred level of energy recuperation.

Cargo Space
The bZ offers 27.7 cu-ft of cargo space behind the second row, or 25.8 cu-ft with the JBL audio system fitted, due to the subwoofer placement. These figures increase to 56.9 and 55 cu-ft, respectively, with the rear seat folded.
Ground Clearance
The bZ's 8.1 inches of ground clearance is above average for the class, so it handles snowy conditions and rough, unpaved roads in its stride. Combined with the available all-wheel drive and X-Mode, power and braking are adjusted to manage off-road duties better than you might expect.

Verdict
The 2026 Toyota bZ is the compact electric crossover that Toyota should have launched from the start, but better late than never, they say. With the dramatic power increase for the AWD models, the much-improved maximum range of 314 miles, and Supercharger access through the new NACS port - and all of that at a price that undercuts the majority of rivals - the bZ has been transformed from an also-ran into a genuinely capable and appealing player in this market segment.
The refreshed styling and cabin feel modern, and equipment levels are generally decent, so this is the perfect little electric crossover for some people, considering Toyota's reliability reputation is baked in. It's still not perfect, and the somewhat basic XLE specs and 150-kW charging-speed limit still lag the best in class. However, there isn't much to complain about at the price. The XLE Plus is the best value of all at a sub-$38K price point, especially if you want maximum range without stepping into premium pricing territory.
