Toyota Resale Value: 5 Models That Lose the Least After Five Years
Toyota is the world's biggest car company when judged on volumes sold, and it has regularly topped the US sales charts in many categories that it competes in. Its impressive sales record is mainly down to Toyota's reputation for manufacturing vehicles with exceptional reliability, long-term durability, and low maintenance costs.
While many competitors may bring flashier tech or radical design shifts to market sooner, Toyota prefers to focus on refining its existing systems and rolling out gradual improvements. This conservative approach builds consumer trust, as nothing is more appealing than the promise of a reliable and affordable motoring experience. However, as you will see, any big changes are often met with skepticism, as Toyota customers generally prefer to stick with what they know.
This also translates into a high demand for used Toyotas, and we have identified the five models with the best resale values over a five-year period. We collated data from several trusted sources including AutoTempest, Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book to ensure that the figures below are representative of what these vehicles can be bought for today. Price figures are based on averages across various model trims.
Toyota Tacoma
- Third Generation: 2016-2023
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $35,200
- New Cost in 2021: $26,400 – $44,325 (excl. fees and taxes)
The Toyota Tacoma has long been a top performer on the used car market, and not just in the truck category. Its popularity stems from its hard-won reputation for durability under the toughest conditions, and its impressive capability off-road, particularly in the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims. Many owners appreciate its size, making it a favorite for both work and overlanding.
Part of its excellent performance here is due to the fact that the fourth-generation Tacoma has suffered from some reliability issues with its turbocharged engines, as well as some electronic niggles. This has renewed interest in the less complex third-gen models, pushing used values up.
Toyota Tundra
- Second Generation: 2007-2021
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $32,000 – $41,000
- New Cost in 2021: $34,025 – $49,245 (excl fees and taxes)
The Tundra is Toyota's full-size challenger to the American Big Three pickups. It doesn't quite achieve the same sales volumes as the dominant F-150, Silverado and Ram models, but it's very capable, and has historically boasted superior long-term reliability and better resale values.
However, part of this second-gen Tundra's stellar depreciation performance is down to the fact that this model was fitted with well-proven V6 and V8 engines, whereas the current third-generation models are available solely with a twin-turbo V6 which has not proven to be nearly as reliable. Buyers are holding on to their older Tundras, and the ones that do come up for sale tend to command higher premiums as a result.
Toyota 4Runner
- Fifth Generation: 2010-2024
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $29,000 – $37,000
- New Cost in 2021: $36,765 – $50,745 (excl fees and taxes)
Few vehicles have a cult following quite like the 4Runner. In what is becoming a recurring trend, its resale value remains high because its replacement moved to a turbocharged engine and introduced several new features, that the ultra-conservative Toyota buyers need time to accept.
While they come to terms with the new 4Runner, the fifth-generation model continues to be very popular, thanks to the very well matured platform, solid naturally aspirated engines and tough body-on-frame chassis. In time, the newer 4Runner, which also uses a rugged body-on-frame chassis, is sure to become just as popular, but for now the older model is holding its head and values high.
Toyota RAV4
- Fifth Generation: 2019-2025
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $21,000 – $27,000
- New Cost in 2021: $26,150 – $37,455 (excl fees and taxes)
The RAV4 isn't just popular, it has been the best-selling SUV in the US for years. It has proven itself over hundreds of thousands of miles and offers an enviable mix of utility, practicality and efficiency. Hybrid models are particularly sought after on the used market for their impressive fuel economy, but there are many trims to choose from like the TRD Off-Road trims which are great for weekend trips off the beaten path.
A new RAV4 was launched this year, featuring hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants only, and while it offers a fresher interior and exterior design, the old model should remain popular for years to come.
Toyota GR Supra
- Fifth Generation: 2020–2026
- Average Used Price (5 Years Old): $36,000 – $44,000
- New Cost in 2021: $43,090 – $54,795 (excl fees and taxes)
Toyota is generally associated with solid but somewhat staid sedans, SUVs and trucks, but it also has a range of sporty models that have a strong enthusiast following. The Supra came about thanks to a collaboration with BMW, and it borrows its engine, platform and powertrain from the Bavarian brand.
Toyota engineers had a hand in the overall design, including the suspension and engine tuning, and the end result is a desirable two-door sports car that doesn't lose much of its luster on the secondhand market. Thanks to the ultra-reliable and potent B58 BMW inline-six engine, and Toyota's attention to detail, the Supra is as reliable as a Toyota should be, which always helps keep values buoyant.
