What are the most spacious third-row SUVs?

Not all SUVs with a third row of seats are equal. Three-row SUVs, which seat six to eight passengers, are some of the most versatile vehicles on the market, but choosing one isn't easy. Despite the long list of three-rowers to choose from, not all models have large third rows, and some provide very little cargo space behind the third row.

Here, Edmunds rounds up 10 models with third-row seating and enough space for your family. The SUVs are divided into three categories - large, midsize and electric - and ranked by the amount of legroom they provide. The analysis also includes their starting price and the amount of cargo space behind the third row, so you'll know if you'll have to compromise on luggage room for that third-row space.

Large three-row SUVs

Chevrolet Suburban

Third-row legroom: 36.7 inches

Cargo space: 41.5 cubic feet

Starting price: $65,995

The king of third-row legroom is none other than the Chevy Suburban, the long-running SUV that's become the go-to vehicle for many large families.

The Suburban and its corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV, share the same massive third-row dimensions, making them the most spacious third-row SUV trio in America. The shorter Tahoe has a slightly smaller third row but significantly less cargo space.

Besides its mega size, the Suburban has high towing capacity, a long list of available tech features, and an optional diesel engine that delivers impressive fuel efficiency. The top models could stand to have better interior quality. The Suburban was updated for 2025 with a reworked exterior, a redesigned interior, more standard features and improved tech features. For 2026, things stay about the same - nice and roomy.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Third-row legroom: 36.6 inches

Cargo space: 27.9 cubic feet (standard), 42.6 cubic feet (L model)

Starting price: $64,740

The Grand Wagoneer's third-row legroom is a pinch less than the Suburban's, but the Jeep's third row is larger in every other dimension and is technically the largest. The longer Grand Wagoneer L shares the same third-row dimensions but offers more cargo space.

Introduced in 2022, the Grand Wagoneer is the new kid on the large-SUV block. Jeep's biggest SUV is very competitive thanks to its huge, upscale interior, superb towing capacity, solid off-road capability and easy-to-use infotainment system. The L model also provides more cargo space than the Suburban and Ford Expedition Max. One of the few complaints is its ride quality over large bumps. Jeep simplified the lineup for 2026, getting rid of the standard Wagoneer, and made some styling tweaks to the exterior while lowering the base price. A range-extended electric powertrain with an estimated 150-mile electric driving range will be added this year.

Ford Expedition

Third-row legroom: 36.5 inches

Cargo space: 21.6 cubic feet (standard), 36.1 cubic feet (Max model)

Starting price: $64,995

The Ford Expedition just barely offers the least amount of third-row legroom out of the large SUVs on this list, but the back row still has plenty of room for adults. The third row in both the regular Expedition and the Expedition Max is the same size, but the Max is longer and provides more cargo room. If you want a more luxurious ride, the Lincoln Navigator and longer Navigator L have the same third-row dimensions.

Ford redesigned the Expedition for 2025 with a new exterior and interior design, more standard features, the brand's latest tech and a new off-road-oriented Tremor model. Fortunately, the Expedition retained all the qualities that make it a great choice for a large SUV, including a huge interior, powerful engines, a high towing capacity, and a long list of tech and towing features. There are no changes for the 2026 model year.

Midsize three-row SUVs

Volkswagen Atlas

Third-row legroom: 33.7 inches

Cargo space: 20.6 cubic feet

Starting price: $40,785

The Atlas offers the most legroom among midsize three-row SUVs. But this distinction only applies to the regular Atlas. Note that the sportier Atlas Cross Sport only provides two rows of seating.

The Atlas is a compelling three-row SUV, but it faces serious competition. Adults can comfortably fit in all three rows, and there is ample cargo space behind the third row, which isn't always the case in this segment. To top it off, the Atlas also provides a very comfortable ride. If it weren't for its underwhelming engine and certain controls that can be difficult to use, the Atlas could be at the top of its class.

After a refresh for 2024 the Atlas only received minor updates for 2025, and it's basically unchanged for the 2026 model year. But a redesigned model is around the corner.

Toyota Grand Highlander

Third-row legroom: 33.5 inches

Cargo space: 20.6 cubic feet

Starting price: $43,155

The Grand Highlander joined the Toyota lineup for 2024. As the name implies, it's a larger version of the regular Highlander that boasts a larger third row. The Lexus version, called the TX, also has a large third row that's identical in size. The Grand Highlander's third row is so large that it's almost comparable to the larger Sequoia's.

It took a while for Toyota to offer a midsize SUV with a large third row, but it was worth the wait. The Grand Highlander's impressive amount of cargo and passenger space, excellent ride quality, generous list of standard features and fuel-efficient engine make it one of Edmunds' highest-ranking three-row SUVs. However, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is preferred for its improved efficiency. It offers two hybrid engines, a very efficient base version and a Hybrid Max unit that provides the most power. The Grand Highlander is unchanged for the 2026 model year.

Dodge Durango

Third-row legroom: 33.5 inches

Cargo space: 17.2 cubic feet

Starting price: $40,990

Although the current generation of the Durango has been around for more than 10 years, it still has a lot to offer. In addition to its large third row, the Durango has a stout towing capacity of up to 8,700 pounds, provides ample cargo space and gives you a choice of three engines, including two V8s. The top SRT Hellcat model boasts a 710-horsepower supercharged V8.

It's hard to beat the Durango's combination of performance and versatility, but the aging SUV falls short in most other categories such as comfort, tech and luxury. Its interior also looks low-budget when compared to the cabins of most rivals. But if its drawbacks don't bother you and you want V8 power, consider the GT Hemi model. For 2026, a new Jailbreak package is available for the SRT Hellcat that unlocks all sorts of customization, from paint options to wheel designs and even the color of the seat belts.

Honda Pilot

Third-row legroom: 32.5 inches

Cargo space: 18.6 cubic feet

Starting price: $43,690

Honda's largest SUV isn't one of our top three-row SUVs, but it's an all-around solid choice for a family hauler. The Pilot's third row is large, but adults might feel cramped due to the high floor and the lack of footroom under the second-row seats.

The Pilot's middling performance in the competitive midsize SUV segment is due to its average fuel economy, below-average value proposition and lackluster driving performance. Although it comes standard with many advanced driver aids, they lack refinement. On the plus side, the big Honda has a roomy cabin, ample cargo space, excellent small-items storage and easy-to-use controls. Honda fixed one of our biggest complaints for 2026, replacing both the 7-inch and 9-inch touchscreens with a new standard 12.3-inch unit. The exterior also gets a refresh and some minor tweaks.

Ford Explorer

Third-row legroom: 32.2 inches

Cargo space: 16.3 cubic feet

Starting price: $40,025

The Explorer offers a lot of legroom, just beating the Chevrolet Traverse (which didn't make the list) by the slimmest margin. However, the third row's other dimensions aren't as impressive. Get your hands on a 2025 or newer model if you can because Ford significantly refreshed the styling, interior and tech features, including the BlueCruise, a hands-free driving system.

The Explorer boasts strong engine options, excellent handling for a three-row SUV, and lots of available tech features. But the Ford isn't a class leader because it's not as roomy or as comfortable as many rivals and it has the least cargo space on this list. Ford adds a new Tremor off-road trim for 2026, which features beefier styling, all-terrain tires and a slight suspension lift.

Electric three-row SUVs

Lucid Gravity

Third-row legroom: 33.9 inches

Cargo space: 21.3 cubic feet, 8.1 cubic feet in the front trunk

Starting price: $81,550

The Gravity is a new electric SUV from Lucid, an EV startup that also sells the Air sedan. Although the three-rower is the brand's first SUV, it's easily one of the best electric family haulers on the market. The Grand Touring model offers impressive range, with 450 miles on tap - among the longest of any EV. With up to 828 horsepower, the Gravity also hits 60 mph about as quickly as a high-end sports car. And folks who enjoy spirited driving on curvy roads will be impressed by the handling dynamics of such a large vehicle.

But is the Gravity good for families? Absolutely. All three rows provide plenty of space, including the third row that offers the most legroom on this list after the top three behemoths. The Lucid has as much cargo space behind the third row as the larger Ford Expedition. Also, long road trips should be easier than in most electric SUVs because the Gravity charges faster than almost any other EV on the market when hooked up to a powerful fast-charging station. A less expensive Touring model was added for 2026, bringing the starting price down by about $15K.

Rivian R1S

Third-row legroom: 32.8 inches

Cargo space: 17.7 cubic feet, 11.1 cubic feet in the front trunk

Starting price: $78,885

The R1S is a large electric SUV from Rivian, another EV startup. Adults can comfortably fit in this SUV's third row, but cargo space behind the third row is among the smallest on this list. Fortunately, the Rivian also has a large front trunk.

The R1S has a few drawbacks, including a slightly firm ride for a luxury SUV. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration also aren't offered. But there's plenty to like about the R1S besides its roomy cabin.

The electric SUV is available in several powertrain configurations, including a quad-motor setup that produces a neck-snapping 1,025 horsepower and a dual-motor version that provides a range of up to 410 miles with the largest Max battery pack. The R1S also touts impressive off-road capability and strong on-road performance, and it sports a distinctive look compared to the ocean of mainstream-looking SUVs. It also comes standard with a generous list of standard features. The quad-motor variant is new for 2026, and all models have now switched to a Tesla-style NACS charging port.
