Carolina Surgery Center celebrates 25th anniversary
When the Carolina Surgical Center opened in Rock Hill it was not on the leading edge of health care changes – but it wasn’t far behind.
The center on South Herlong Street was one of fewer than 400 outpatient surgery centers in the country when it opened 25 years ago. Now there are more than 5,000 centers nationwide.
The center recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, honoring its growth in services and the thousands of patients it has served. In its first year doctors at the center performed 936 procedures. In 2014 they did 5,200 procedures.
The procedures cover an array of medical needs, and more surgeries are being allowed at such centers as they can provide efficient and cost-effective care, said Dr. Gregory Parsons, the center’s medical director.
The center is a joint venture with Piedmont Medical Center and Tenet Healthcare.
Two center employees were recognized at the 25th anniversary celebration:
▪ Felicia Woods, a certified surgical technician, who has worked at the center for 20 years.
▪ Beverly Turney, a central sterilizes processing technician, who has worked at the center since it opened. Turney is responsible for cleaning, sterlizing and making sure the surgical instruments are in working order. Co-workers describe her as the “backbone” of the center.
