For 57 years thousands of employees came through the gate of the Celanese Celriver Plant on Cherry Road to work. They came from all walks of life, men and women, all races. At its peak, Celriver employed 2,500 workers. The plant closed in 2005.

The plant site is now being developed as Riverwalk. As development continues at Riverwalk, the Celriver Legacy Project has formed to honor the plant’s history and its people. On Friday, the project installed a two-sided historical marker with the assistance of York County historian Michael Scoggins.

Their next project is a Legacy Plaza. Donations for the project can be sent to Celriver Legacy Project, PO Box 11134, Rock Hill, S.C. 29731. For information on the project go to facebook.com/CelriverLegacyProject.
