Fort Mill won’t have its Strawberry Festival, closes all parks due to coronavirus.

The South Carolina Strawberry Festival is canceled.

The Town of Fort Mill announced an extension to Friday’s postponement of town events or events at town facilities. The postponement now runs through May 10.

The decision includes the cancellation of the Strawberry Festival, which annually brings tens of thousands of people to Elisha Park. Events for the festival this year were to run April 25 to May 2.

The town release explained the decision not to host or allow events:

“This is in accordance with a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendation that all public events or gatherings with more than 50 people should be postponed or canceled for the next eight weeks. The decision was made in an effort to combat the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and to protect the health of the community.”

In a separate but related decision, the town will close all its parks and recreation sites via emergency ordinance. Anyone found in a town park will be asked to leave. The closing is in place until further notice.

Fort Mill isn’t alone. Tega Cay City Council meets March 16. An item on that agenda is an emergency ordinance to temporarily close all city parks and facilities. Fort Mill and Tega Cay previously announced they would suspend their spring recreation league seasons.

Last week, Rock Hill postponed its recreation programs impacting youth play, seniors and a variety of indoor and outdoor activity.
