Coronavirus: Winthrop, Clinton move to remote classes, postpone graduations
Winthrop University students will finish out this semester’s courses remotely due to coronavirus, or COVID-19, according to a statement from interim president George Hynd Thursday.
Winthrop students have been on spring break. Remote instruction begins Monday.
Winthrop also is postponing spring commencement, according to the university.
“We know our seniors and graduate students are faced with unprecedented events that are taking away from what should be a joyous time as they conclude their academic career at Winthrop,” reads the statement. “Although these circumstances are beyond our control, we can assure our students that their Winthrop experience will not end without recognizing and celebrating that they will be Winthrop graduates.”
Clinton College in Rock Hill is moving to online classes for the rest of the spring semester, according to a release from the school late Thursday. Clinton is also postponing baccalaureate and commencement ceremonies scheduled for May 1 and 2 until December.
South Carolina has more than 80 confirmed cases of coronavirus in 17 counties as of Thursday, according to officials with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. Lancaster County has three cases, York County one case and Kershaw County, which borders Lancaster County, has the most at 29.
