York County has 2nd coronavirus case; SC total rises to 173, health officials say

York County has its second confirmed case of the coronavirus, South Carolina health officials announced Saturday.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control identified 46 additional positive tests of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 173. Three people in the state have died as a result of the coronavirus, according to DHEC.

Details about the new case, like whether the patient has been hospitalized or how they may have contracted COVID-19, were not immediately available. The first York County case was announced Tuesday.

York County officials found out about the first York County coronavirus case minutes before it was announced by DHEC Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Kevin Tolson said. And since then, DHEC officials have not provided more information about who the patient is, where the patient lives, or if the patient is hospitalized or under quarantine, Tolson said.

“The sheriff’s office is still seeking information about the York County case,” Tolson said Thursday afternoon. “Nothing new has been given to us about this case.”
