Coronavirus cases in York County near 100; Lancaster and Chester counties each add 2
York County reported 10 new coronavirus cases Monday, South Carolina health officials said. Lancaster and Chester counties each added two cases.
Now, York County has 95 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. Lancaster County has 43 cases and Chester County has 14, according to DHEC.
DHEC reported 183 new cases of coronavirus Monday, bringing the total to 2,232 cases across all 46 counties. The department also announced that four more people across the state died after contracting the virus. In all, there have been 48 coronavirus-related deaths in South Carolina, two of whom were York County residents.
Lancaster and Chester counties have not had any deaths reported.
More than 21,000 coronavirus tests have been completed by DHEC’s public lab and private labs in the state, according to the department.
On Monday, Lt. Michael Chavis with the Rock Hill Police Department confirmed that two employees with the department have tested positive for the coronavirus. Also, company officials confirmed Monday a resident and staff member at a Rock Hill senior living facility have tested positive.
At a press conference Monday, S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster issued a mandatory home or work order, which will go into effect Tuesday.
York County Emergency Management Director Chuck Haynes, said staying home remains the best way to keep the spread of the virus as low as possible.
“These next couple of weeks are crucial for the health and safety of the people of York County,” Haynes said. “Stay at home if at all possible. That is the best way to prevent the spread — no contact with others outside home.”
Last week, Chester Mayor Wanda Stringfellow declared a state of emergency for the city and imposed an emergency curfew from 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., which went into effect Sunday. According to a city ordinance, it is illegal to travel “upon any street, alley, roadway, or public property” during curfew unless it is to receive medical assistance.
Coronavirus ZIP codes
On Friday, McMaster directed DHEC to publish the number of positive COVID-19 cases in each county ZIP code, which had previously been withheld.
DHEC also released projected numbers of potential positive cases — people who have not been tested yet — in each ZIP code. There are 588 estimated cases in York County, according to DHEC. In Lancaster County, there are 273 estimated cases and in Chester County, there are 103.
According to its website, DHEC calculated the number of estimated cases based on evidence that for every known case, there could be up to nine unidentified people with the virus.
