York County has 7 more coronavirus cases; Lancaster County approaches 50, DHEC says

Seven new cases of coronavirus were reported in York County, South Carolina health officials announced Wednesday. Lancaster County added two cases and Chester County added one.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 139 new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, across the state, for a total of 2,552 cases in all 46 counties.

DHEC also announced Tuesday that 12 more people in the state died after contracting the virus, the highest daily increase in deaths. In all, there have been 63 coronavirus-related deaths in South Carolina, two of whom were York County residents.

Now, there are 115 confirmed cases in York County, according to DHEC. Lancaster County has 48 cases and Chester County has 16.

More than 24,000 coronavirus tests have been completed by DHEC’s public lab and private labs in the state, according to the department.

This week, DHEC started releasing projected numbers of potential positive cases — people who have not been tested yet — in each ZIP code, and the projections show a dramatically higher case count in the region.

DHEC estimated that there are 710 unidentified cases in York County, which means nearly 86% of the county’s cases are unreported. The department estimated Lancaster County has 304 unidentified cases and Chester County has 107 unidentified cases.

About 86% of Lancaster County’s cases are unreported and nearly 87% of Chester County’s cases are unreported, according to the new estimates.

According to its website, DHEC calculated the number of estimated cases based on evidence that for every known case, there could be up to nine unidentified people with the virus.
