York, Lancaster County log new coronavirus cases as SC total passes 6,200

The York County region continues to log new coronavirus, or COVID-19, cases, health officials say.

York County is up five cases to 215 and Lancaster County is up three cases to 99 as of Friday. Chester County had no new cases Friday and remains at 30, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

South Carolina had 160 new cases Friday, bringing the total to 6,258, DHEC reported. Officials also reported 12 additional deaths, bringing the number of people who have died to 256.

One middle-aged person from Spartanburg County and 11 elderly people died, DHEC reported Friday. One person was from Greenville, three from Clarendon, one from Florence, one from Horry, one from Orangeburg, one from Richland, one from Spartanburg and two from Williamsburg county.

Gov. Henry McMaster announced Friday that on Monday restaurants can again allow outdoor seating. McMaster did not address indoor dining.

Steve Willis, Lancaster County Administrator, said even with restrictions set to ease, officials urge the public to practice social distancing and safety guidelines. Lancaster County has seen at least three additional cases for several days in a row and is close to surpassing 100 cases countywide, Willis said.

“We still encourage residents to take steps to protect their health and the health of their family and friends,” Willis said. “The virus is still active and we must take reasonable action to prevent the transmission of disease.”

S.C. Rep. Tommy Pope, R-York and speaker pro tem of the S.C. House of Representatives, is a member of the AccelerateSC task force that has advised the governor about re-opening timetables and safety concerns. Pope said the eased restrictions can balance both the economic needs for workers and businesses, while still ensuring safety.

“I appreciate the balance our governor has struck between protecting our health and protecting our economy,” Pope said. “That’s why I was excited to be appointed to serve on AccelerateSC. I’m proud to work with Governor McMaster to get South Carolina back on track as safely and as quickly as possible.”
