As Lancaster County prepares to reopen, 7 more positive for coronavirus, DHEC says
Seven new cases of coronavirus were reported in Lancaster County over the weekend — days before the county is set to reopen Monday, South Carolina health officials announced.
The county, which will reopen its libraries and animal shelter next week as part of its phased reopening plan, now has had 110 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic started, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
York County confirmed four new cases over the weekend, for a total of 238 cases, according to DHEC. Chester County, which did not report new cases, has had 38 cases, according to DHEC.
DHEC identified 113 new statewide cases of COVID-19 bringing its total to 7,653 cases across all 46 counties. The agency also announced Sunday that one individual in Marion County died after contracting the virus. Based on DHEC’s count, there now have been 331 coronavirus-related deaths in South Carolina.
York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said her office has confirmed six residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19. Lancaster County’s Karla Knight-Deese said her office has confirmed five residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19.
Chester County has not reported any deaths.
Testing and projected COVID-19 cases
As of Sunday, labs across the state have completed more than 84,457 tests. DHEC’s own lab has done 20,813 tests. DHEC projected last week that about 81% of those diagnosed with the virus have recovered.
Hospitals across the state are at about 64% capacity. Sunday, DHEC officials said, of the 6,354 beds currently used across the state, 446 beds are occupied by patients with known or suspected cases of the virus.
Based on new projections, there are unreported cases in the area. DHEC calculated that there are up to 1,462 unidentified cases in York County. The agency estimated Lancaster County has as many as 676 unidentified cases, and Chester County has up to 233 unidentified cases.
According to its website, DHEC calculates the projected cases based on evidence that for every known case, there could be up to nine unidentified people with the virus.
