York, Lancaster counties log new COVID-19 cases as SC passes 13K

York County on Thursday logged six more cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, health officials reported. Lancaster County added four cases.

Chester County did not report any new cases.

South Carolina health officials reported 361 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, bringing the total confirmed in the state to 13,005.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control also reported seven more deaths, bringing that total to 525 in the state.

Six people who died were elderly individuals from Florence, Lexington, Richland and Spartanburg counties, DHEC reports. Another middle-aged person from Greenville County also died.

Testing

Piedmont Medical Center, in partnership with DHEC, is offering free drive-thru COVID-19 testing Friday, according to a release from the hospital. The site is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and no appointment is required, the release said. Each car is limited to two tests.

Chester County will continue its free testing this week. The site, which is being administered by MUSC, is at the Back Lot at 139 Cadz Street from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 5, officials said. No appointment is required and people will receive test results within 72 hours, Chester City Council member Angela Douglas said.

As of Wednesday, DHEC and private labs have conducted 238,808 tests in the state.

Local impact

Coronavirus has canceled summer events in the area.

Due to COVID-19, the York City Council voted to postpone the annual Summerfest and July 4 celebration, The Herald previously reported.
