Coronavirus latest: York County adds highest number of daily cases over weekend
York County added a total of 54 coronavirus cases over the weekend, South Carolina health officials reported.
The county continued a record-breaking week, confirming 34 new cases on Saturday that marked the highest daily number of cases reported to date in the pandemic, the Department of Health and Environmental Control said. On Sunday, the county added 20 more new cases, for a total of 635 cases, according to the agency.
At least 20 new cases have been reported in York in each of the past seven days — a concerning trend to local health officials.
York County Emergency Management officials suspect the surge is related to increased coronavirus testing across the state and in the county. But some officials worry that the jump is related to South Carolina’s lifted restrictions, and stress the importance of wearing masks and social distancing when in public.
“Just because some in the state government say it is safe to reopen and go back to almost what it was like before this pandemic, (that) doesn’t mean it is safe for people,” S.C. Rep. John King told The Herald last week. “You have to look at the numbers. Cases are going up. The cases are higher now than ever in our state and in York County, and daily totals are the highest yet.”
DHEC identified 799 new cases of COVID-19 across the state Sunday, pushing the overall total of infections to 18,795.
Lancaster County added 15 new cases over the weekend, for a total of 246 cases, according to DHEC. Chester County reported five new cases over the weekend and now has had 120 cases confirmed since the pandemic started, DHEC said.
Over the past seven days, more than 400 new cases have been reported statewide each day. DHEC officials estimate that a total of 2,900 new cases will be reported this week.
With the addition of one new death related to the virus reported Sunday, the state’s death toll is now at 600.
On Saturday, 5,875 tests were conducted statewide, with 13.6% having positive results, DHEC reported.
Hospitals across the state are at about 67% of capacity. Of the 7,023 beds in use across the state on Sunday, DHEC officials said, 521 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.
