Coronavirus latest: York County case total tops 800, Chester County adds 1 death
York County added a total of 71 coronavirus cases over the weekend, and Chester County reported one coronavirus-related death, South Carolina health officials announced.
The death in Chester County involved an elderly individual, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control. Based on the agency’s count, there has been one coronavirus-related death in Chester County. However, in May, DHEC reported one death related to the virus in the county.
In May, Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker said the county’s first reported coronavirus-related death involved an elderly individual who was a Chester resident and died at a Columbia hospital.
York County continued a record-breaking week, confirming 40 new cases on Saturday that marked the highest daily number of cases reported to date in the pandemic, according to DHEC. On Sunday, the county added 31 more cases, for a total of 813 cases, according to the agency.
In four of the last seven days, York County has reported at least 30 new daily cases, a concerning trend to local health officials. In the past two weeks, the county’s cases have increased by about 40% from the total cases in the previous three months, officials said.
“These cases continue to go up,” York County Council member William “Bump” Roddey told The Herald last week. “It is clear now that positive cases are going up faster than just because we are testing more people,” he said, dismissing the idea that expanded testing alone has led to rising case numbers.
DHEC identified 907 new cases of COVID-19 across the state Sunday, pushing the overall total of infections to 24,661 and probable cases to 32.
Lancaster County added 23 new cases over the weekend, for a total of 322 cases, according to DHEC. Chester County reported six new cases over the weekend and now has had 138 cases confirmed since the pandemic started, DHEC said.
With the addition of nine new deaths related to the virus reported across the state Sunday, one of which was in Chester County, the state’s death toll is now at 653.
On Saturday, 5,622 tests were conducted statewide, with 16.1% having positive results, DHEC reported. Since March, labs across the state have completed 337,469 tests.
Hospitals across the state are at about 69% of capacity. Of the 7,173 beds in use across the state on Sunday, DHEC officials said, 692 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.
