Coronavirus latest: York County cases continue to spike as total exceeds 900
York County now has confirmed more than 900 coronavirus cases since the pandemic started, South Carolina health officials announced Wednesday.
The county added 28 cases Wednesday, for a total of 913, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control. In four of the last seven days, York County reported at least 30 new daily cases, and in two of the days, the county reported more than 40 daily cases.
DHEC identified 1,291 new cases of COVID-19 across the state Wednesday, the highest number of cases reported in one day so far. The overall total of infections are now 27,842 and probable cases are 55.
York County Council member William “Bump” Roddey told The Herald Wednesday he is insisting county officials recommend people wear masks in public as coronavirus cases continue to soar. He said the recent spike in York County that led to record numbers in the past two weeks has pushed him to ask the entire council to act.
“I’ve stated several times over that we as a county needed to step up and speak as a council or county about wearing masks,” Roddey said in an email to other council members and county management. “The public looks to us for leadership as a body, not just individual council members.”
Lancaster County added three new cases Wednesday, for a total of 346, according to DHEC. Chester County reported two new cases and now has had 153 cases confirmed since the pandemic started, DHEC said.
No new deaths were reported in York, Lancaster or Chester counties Wednesday.
But in the last seven days, Lancaster County has reported six new deaths related to the virus. Based on DHEC’s count, the county has had 10 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths. Lancaster County Coroner Karla Knight Deese announced Tuesday that her office has confirmed 12 coronavirus-related deaths in the county.
With the addition of eight new deaths related to the virus reported across the state Wednesday, one of which was in Lancaster County, the state’s death toll is now at 683.
On Tuesday, 8,191 tests were conducted statewide, with 15.8% having positive results, DHEC reported. Since March, labs across the state have completed 362,219 tests.
Hospitals across the state are at about 74% of capacity. Of the 7,721 beds in use across the state on Wednesday, DHEC officials said, 832 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.
