Coronavirus latest: York County adds more than 100 cases over the weekend

York County added a total of 103 coronavirus cases over the weekend, South Carolina health officials reported.

The county continued a record-breaking week, confirming 54 new cases on Saturday that marked the highest daily number of cases reported to date in the pandemic, the Department of Health and Environmental Control said.

On Sunday, the county added 49 more new cases, for a total of 1,094 cases, according to the agency.

York County Council member William “Bump” Roddey has pushed for a mask mandate in the county, but county officials have so far only agreed that masks should be recommended. He said with the growing number of cases, it’s important that people wear masks in public.

“It’s a sad day for Rock Hill and York County residents when elected officials have not considered some form of mask requirements to protect its citizens,” he said. “Without masks being worn in public places where the likelihood of the transmission of COVID-19 is more prevalent, we have no way to reduce the spread.”

Rock Hill City Council member Nikita Jackson said she also supports a mask mandate in the county and city.

“How can I go against something I choose to do and practice without mandates for my own safety and others around me?” Jackson said. “Reports and studies show what works. Let’s put these practices in place for the safety of our community.”

DHEC identified 1,366 new cases of COVID-19 across the state Sunday, pushing the overall total of infections to 33,221.

Lancaster County added 25 new cases over the weekend, for a total of 411 cases, according to DHEC. Chester County reported 12 new cases over the weekend and now has had 170 cases confirmed since the pandemic started, DHEC said.

On Saturday, DHEC reported that a middle-age individual from Lancaster County died as a result of the virus.

Based on DHEC’s count, the county has had 11 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths. Lancaster County Coroner Karla Knight Deese announced last week that her office has confirmed 12 coronavirus-related deaths in the county.

With the addition of five new deaths related to the virus reported across the state Sunday, the state’s death toll is now at 712.

On Saturday, 6,784 tests were conducted statewide, with 20.1% having positive results, DHEC reported. Since March, labs across the state have completed 398,625 tests.

Hospitals across the state are at about 71% of capacity. Of the 7,488 beds in use across the state on Sunday, DHEC officials said, 954 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.

Hospitals in York County are at 82% capacity and Lancaster County hospitals are at about 42% capacity, according to DHEC.
