Lancaster County jail worker tests positive for Coronavirus, sheriff’s office says

A correction officer at the Lancaster County jail has tested positive for coronavirus, officials said.

The single officer tested positive Thursday, said Doug Barfield, spokesman for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office runs the jail.

The officer was sent home and the shift of workers at the jail during the same period were sent home, Barfield said. Workers and inmates at the jail were tested for Covid-19 and no other positive tests were found, Barfield said.

The jail was cleaned and disinfected, Barfield said.

The jail houses around 100 inmates who are awaiting court hearings or serving short sentences, officials said.

Darren Player, Lancaster County Emergency Management Director, said trained workers from his office were involved in cleaning the jail facility after the positive test.

Lancaster County has had 594 positive cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The positive test for a law enforcement official in Lancaster County is the second that has been reported. A probation employee tested positive in April, police and health officials said.
