Coronavirus latest: 13th York County resident dies from virus, 60-plus cases added

York County now has had 13 residents die as a result of the coronavirus, South Carolina health officials announced Monday.

The individual who died was elderly, the Department of Health and Environmental Control announced. DHEC did not release any more information.

The county also added 64 new coronavirus cases, pushing its total number of cases to 1,946, according to DHEC. In five of the last seven days, York County has added more than 50 cases a day. In April and May, the county regularly added cases in the single digits.

Across the state, DHEC identified 1,532 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, bringing the state’s overall total infections to 56,485. Officials also reported that an additional 13 South Carolinians have died as a result of the virus, including the York County resident, which brings the state’s death toll to 961.

Following a jump in reported cases over the weekend, Lancaster County’s daily number of cases dropped. The county added two cases Monday, and now has had a total of 644, according to DHEC.

DHEC officials have reported 15 probable cases in Lancaster County, which would be someone who has not received lab test results, but has coronavirus symptoms or a positive antibody test, according to DHEC’s definition.

Chester County had a jump in coronavirus-related deaths. An elderly resident and a child died as a result of the virus over the weekend, according to DHEC. The Chester County child was the first child in the state to die of COVID-19, according to DHEC.

Cases in Chester County continued to climb Monday. Eight new cases were added, for a total of 291 since the pandemic started, according to DHEC.

Coronavirus testing

On Sunday, 7,230 tests were conducted statewide, with 21.2% having positive results, DHEC reported. Since March, labs across the state have completed 553,515 tests.

Hospitals across the state are at about 72% of capacity. Of the 7,692 beds in use across the state on Sunday, DHEC officials said 1,488 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.

As of Monday, 205 of the coronavirus patients are on ventilators.

South Carolina first surpassed 1,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients on June 29. Hospitals have seen more than 1,000 coronavirus patients every day since.

Hospitals in York County are at 84% capacity, with 241 beds currently in use out of 288, according to DHEC. And Lancaster County hospitals are at about 51% capacity, with 76 beds currently in use out of 149.

Last week, DHEC projected that about 89% of those diagnosed with the virus have recovered.
