Coronavirus latest: 14th Lancaster County residents dies; York County adds 43 cases

Lancaster County now has had 14 residents die after contracting coronavirus, South Carolina health officials announced Tuesday.

The individual who died was elderly, the Department of Health and Environmental Control announced. DHEC did not release any more information. In June, the county reported eight coronavirus-related deaths. From the beginning of March to the end of May, Lancaster County added a total of five deaths related to the virus.

The county also added 16 new coronavirus cases, pushing its total number of cases to 657, according to DHEC.

Across the state, DHEC identified 2,205 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, bringing the state’s overall total infections to 60,220. Tuesday’s cases marks the second highest increase in one day. The previous record was set on Saturday with 2,239 statewide cases.

Officials also reported that an additional 23 South Carolinians have died as a result of the virus, including the Lancaster County resident, which brings the state’s death toll to 984.

York County added 43 new coronavirus cases, pushing its total number of cases to 1,986, according to DHEC. In four of the last seven days, York County has added more than 60 cases a day. In April and May, the county regularly added cases in the single digits.

In the last week, cases in Chester County have jumped. The county’s daily case count usually stays under five, but the county added more than 10 cases a day over the weekend and reported eight cases Tuesday, pushing its total number of cases to 299, according to DHEC.

Coronavirus testing

On Monday, 10,262 tests were conducted statewide, with 21.5% having positive results, DHEC reported. Since March, labs across the state have completed 563,948 tests.

Hospitals across the state are at about 74% of capacity. Of the 7,976 beds in use across the state on Tuesday, DHEC officials said 1,550 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.

Tuesday’s numbers marked the highest number of hospitalized patients. The previous record was set on Monday with 1,472 people, according to DHEC.

South Carolina first surpassed 1,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients on June 29. Hospitals have seen more than 1,000 coronavirus patients every day since.

Hospitals in York County are at 84% capacity, with 241 beds currently in use out of 288, according to DHEC. And Lancaster County hospitals are at about 47% capacity, with 70 beds currently in use out of 149.

Monday, DHEC projected that about 92% of those diagnosed with the virus in the state have recovered.
