Coronavirus latest: More than 2,000 cases confirmed in York County since pandemic started

York County’s confirmed coronavirus cases have now topped 2,000, South Carolina health officials announced Wednesday.

The county added 73 new cases Wednesday, for a total of 2,059 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic started, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Across the state, DHEC identified 1,850 new cases Wednesday, bringing the state’s overall total infections to 62,071.

Officials also reported no additional deaths in connection with the virus, though officials did announce five probable deaths due to the coronavirus. One of the probable deaths was an elderly individual from Lancaster County, according to DHEC.

The state has reported 984 deaths of people confirmed to have had the coronavirus, according to DHEC.

Lancaster County added 11 cases, pushing its total to 668, according to DHEC. The agency has also reported 16 probable cases in the area.

Cases in Chester County have now topped 300, according to DHEC.

In the past week, cases in Chester County have climbed. The county’s daily case count usually stays under five, but the county added more than 10 cases a day over the weekend and reported six cases Wednesday, pushing its total number of cases to 305, according to DHEC.

Coronavirus testing

On Tuesday, 8,575 tests were conducted statewide, with 21.6% having positive results, DHEC reported. Since March, labs across the state have completed 572,823 tests.

Hospitals across the state are at about 73% of capacity. Of the 7,853 beds in use across the state on Wednesday, DHEC officials said 1,560 were occupied by coronavirus patients or those who are suspected of having COVID-19.

South Carolina first surpassed 1,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients on June 29. Hospitals have seen more than 1,000 coronavirus patients every day since.

Hospitals in York County are at 82% capacity, with 236 of the 288 beds currently in use, according to DHEC. And Lancaster County hospitals are at about 47% capacity, with 70 of 149 beds currently in use.

Monday, DHEC projected that about 92% of those diagnosed with the virus in the state have recovered.
