Coronavirus latest: York County adds 100-plus cases in one day, marking new record

York County added more than 100 new cases of coronavirus in a single day, South Carolina health officials announced Sunday.

On Saturday and Sunday, there were 32 and 158 cases added, respectively, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Sunday marks the county’s highest increase in daily cases reported to date during the pandemic. The previous high was 104, which was set on July 3. The county now has a total of 2,384 cases, according to DHEC.

Across the state, DHEC identified 2,335 new cases Sunday, bringing the state’s total reported infections to 69,765. Officials also reported that an additional 19 South Carolinians have died as a result of the virus, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,138.

Sunday’s total includes 526 new confirmed cases from Friday that DHEC received from a private laboratory on Saturday.

Chester County added 24 new coronavirus cases over the weekend, and DHEC officials reported on Saturday that an additional person has died as a result of the virus. In nine days, four people in Chester County have died from the virus. Based on DHEC’s count, there have been six coronavirus-related deaths in Chester County.

The county has had a total of 356 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, according to DHEC.

Lancaster County added 33 new coronavirus cases over the weekend, according to DHEC. The county has had a total of 745 confirmed cases, according to DHEC.

The percentage of tests that come back positive — another indicator of the coronavirus’ spread — has been rising over the last month, according to DHEC officials.

On Saturday, 12,679 tests were conducted statewide, with 18% having positive results, DHEC reported. In May, at its lowest point, the percentage of positive tests fell between 2% and 4% on average.

Since March, labs across the state have completed 626,970 tests.

The number of patients occupying hospital beds was unclear Sunday. At the federal government’s request, DHEC is transitioning from the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network COVID-19 module to TeleTracking’s U.S. Healthcare COVID-19 Portal for monitoring hospital bed occupancy data. Once TeleTracking has sufficient participation and accuracy, DHEC will report from it.
