York County adds 90-plus cases, 3 in Lancaster and Chester die from virus over weekend

York County added 95 more confirmed coronavirus cases and three people died from the virus in Lancaster and Chester counties over the weekend, South Carolina health officials announced.

On Saturday and Sunday, there were 54 and 41 cases added in York County, respectively, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control. The county now has had a total of 3,543 cases confirmed since the pandemic started.

Across the state, DHEC identified 1,011 new cases Sunday, bringing the state’s total reported infections to 99,713. Officials also reported that an additional 18 South Carolinians have died as a result of the virus, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,949.

Health officials announced Saturday an additional person from Chester County died after contracting the virus. The individual was middle-aged, defined by DHEC guidelines, between 35 and 64, and died Thursday, according to the agency.

Based on DHEC’s count, there have been 13 coronavirus-related deaths reported in Chester County, three of which were reported in the last week.

Chester County also added 37 new coronavirus cases over the weekend, which is one of the highest number of cases added in two days. The county now has had a total of 662 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, according to DHEC.

Health officials announced Sunday two people from Lancaster County died from the virus. One individual was elderly, 65 or older, and died Thursday, according to the agency. The other was middle-aged and died Friday, according to DHEC.

Based on DHEC’s count, there have been 23 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the county. In the last week, health officials have reported five deaths in the county.

Lancaster County also added 45 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 1,180 confirmed cases, according to DHEC.

Testing and hospitalizations

The percentage of tests that come back positive — another indicator of the coronavirus’ spread — has been rising over the last month, according to DHEC officials.

On Saturday, 7,853 tests were conducted statewide, with about 13% having positive results, DHEC reported. In May, at its lowest point, the percentage of positive tests averaged 2% to 4%.

Since March, labs across the state have completed 843,241 tests.

The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients has steadily increased since late June and one time peaked at more than 1,700 on July 23.

Of the 1,378 people hospitalized across the state with confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus, 219 are on ventilators, state health officials said Sunday.

Only 2,269 of the state’s 11,094 total hospital beds are available. Across the state, 78% of beds are in use.
