Lancaster County adds 51 coronavirus cases this weekend; York death toll tops 30

Lancaster County continued a trend over the weekend of reporting more coronavirus cases than larger neighboring York County.

With about a third of the population, Lancaster County added 51 new coronavirus cases over the weekend, while York County added a total of 43 cases, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Lancaster County added 30 new cases Saturday and 21 on Sunday, according to DHEC. The county now has had a total of 1,336 cases confirmed since the pandemic started.

York County has had 3,732 cases confirmed since the start of the pandemic, according to DHEC.

DHEC officials said Sunday that 537 more people had tested positive for the virus across the state, marking the lowest statewide case number since 528 were reported on June 10. That brought the total number of South Carolinians diagnosed with coronavirus to 105,466.

The agency also announced that nine more people have died after contracting COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 2,165.

Health officials announced Saturday two additional people from York County died after contracting the virus. Both individuals were elderly, defined by DHEC guidelines as 65 or older. One person died July 28 and the other on July 31, according to the agency.

Based on DHEC’s count, there have been 32 coronavirus-related deaths reported in York.

Total cases in Chester County topped 700 last week. The county added 15 cases over the weekend, for a total of 737 confirmed since the pandemic started, according to DHEC.

Testing and hospitalizations

Another indicator of the coronavirus’ spread is the percentage of tests that turn up positive each day. In recent weeks, the percentage of positive tests averaged 18% to 20%.

On Saturday, 4,886 tests were conducted statewide, with about 11% having positive results. That’s a lower rate than the percentage averaged in March and early April, DHEC reported. In May, at its lowest point, the percentage of positive tests averaged 2% to 4%.

Since March, labs across the state have completed 929,805 tests.

The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients peaked at more than 1,700 on July 23 and has slightly decreased since.

Of the 1,161 people hospitalized across the state with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, 290 are in intensive care and, of those, 188 are on ventilators, state health officials said Sunday.

Of the state’s 10,224 total inpatient hospital beds, 2,260 are available, meaning 77.9% of the state’s beds are in use.

In York County, 76% of beds are occupied. In Lancaster County, 63% of beds are in use.
