Coronavirus update: 3 virus-related deaths reported in York, Chester area

Three coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the York and Chester counties area Thursday, health officials announced.

Both of the residents were 65 or older, and one died in mid-July, while the other died Monday, according to information released by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

A Chester County resident, 65 or older, died at the end of August, according to DHEC data.

The number of coronavirus cases in the area also went up.

An additional 33 cases were reported in York County, according to DHEC. The total case count now sits at 4,912, according to DHEC data. The county also has had 63 deaths since the pandemic started in mid-March.

Cases in Lancaster County went up by 13 Thursday, and in Chester County, two new cases were reported, according to DHEC.

Lancaster County has now tallied 1,927 COVID-19 cases and 42 deaths, according to DHEC data.

In Chester County, there’s been 985 cases and 19 deaths, according to DHEC.

Across South Carolina, 740 cases were reported Thursday. Since mid-March, there’s been 132,565 cases statewide and 2,992 deaths.

Of the 6,294 tests completed Wednesday across the state, 11.8% came back positive, according to DHEC data.

York County

York County has a “moderate” incidence rate, based on DHEC’s definition. The two-week cumulative incidence rate represents new cases reported in the last two weeks per 100,000 people.

In the county, officials have administered 47,478 COVID-19 tests since March, with 13.8% coming back positive, according to DHEC data. The county’s weekly average of percentage positive — which indicates how widespread the virus is — has fallen since it hit a high in mid-July.

For the week ending July 20, on average, about 23.4% of all tests were positive. For the week ending Sept. 16, the total was at 12.8%.

The 29730 ZIP code, which includes Rock Hill and extends to the Lesslie community, has the most coronavirus cases in York County with 1,215. The next highest ZIP code is 29732, which covers the Newport and India Hook areas, with 1,144 cases.

Lancaster County

Lancaster County has a “moderately high” incidence rate, based on DHEC’s definition.

In Lancaster County, health officials administered more than 17,395 COVID-19 tests since March, with 14.7% coming back positive, according to DHEC data. The county’s weekly average of percentage positive has been on the rise since mid-July.

For the week ending on July 19, on average, about 14.6% of all tests were positive. For the week ending Sept. 16, the total was at 19.7%.

The 29720 ZIP code, which covers the city of Lancaster, has the most coronavirus cases in Lancaster County with 1,379.

Chester County

After weeks of having a “high” incidence rate, Chester County is now considered to have a “moderately high” incidence rate, based on DHEC’s definition.

In Chester County, health officials administered more than 7,737 COVID-19 tests since March, with 17.2% coming back positive, according to DHEC data. The county’s weekly average of percentage positive has dropped slightly since mid-July.

For the week ending on July 17, on average, about 27.3% of all tests were positive. For the week ending Sept. 16, the total was at 16%.

The 29706 ZIP code, which covers the city of Chester, has the most coronavirus cases in Chester County with 630. That means about 63% of the county’s cases are in that ZIP code.
