Starting this week, families in the Rock Hill region can protect their young children from COVID-19.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Oct. 29 that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine can now be administered to children ages 5-11.

The vaccine has been found to be 90.7% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children 5-11, the FDA said in its statement.

The vaccine’s safety was studied in approximately 3,100 children in that age group. They received the vaccine and no serious side effects have been detected in the ongoing study.

The Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Lancaster and Chester locations will begin vaccinating children Thursday. Walk-ins are welcome, Ashley Shannon, director of marketing and community relations for MUSC said.

Walmart and Sam’s Club will offer the vaccine to children in 5,100 of their pharmacies, a statement by Walmart’s Senior Director of Clinical Strategy and Operations said Wednesday.

CVS Pharmacy also announced that it will expand vaccines to children 5-11.

Walgreens will begin administering vaccines to children this Saturday, a statement by the company said.
