Here’s where Rock Hill area residents can get a COVID test before Christmas
Hundreds of South Carolina residents are rushing to get a last-minute COVID test before Christmas as cases surge nationwide due to the emergence of the fast-spreading omicron variant, officials said.
“We know this variant is all over the country and the world,” Dr. Brannon Traxler, public health director of the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control, recently said.
The state has so far identified three cases of the omicron variant, all of which were found in the Lowcountry region. The agency sequences only a small fraction of randomly selected positive COVID-19 samples for specific variants, officials said.
While the state, as of Wednesday, has not yet reported any cases on the variant in the Midlands region, which includes York, Lancaster and Chester counties, cases in the three counties are starting to climb.
As a result, state health officials continue to urge residents to get a vaccination or booster shot.
“We really all need to take the same precautions whether we are 10 minutes down the road from our house, or whether we are across the state or across the country or halfway across the world,” Traxler said.
