Firefighters battling outdoor blaze at Chester plant

Chester firefighters are continuing to battle an outdoor blaze at a plant off S.C. 9, an official said Monday.

The fire was called in Saturday at the Hyponex plant on Beltline Road just off S.C. 9, according to Chief Paul Caldwell of the Chester Fire Department.

Firefighters have been tackling the fire since Saturday, but Caldwell said it “peaked” on Sunday. The blaze is in an outdoor storage area and occupies an area about the size of a football field, Caldwell said.

The fire is still active, but firefighters have it contained, he said.

“It’s going burn and smolder for a while,” he said. “I don’t have a good time frame on how long that may be yet.”

No injuries have been reported. Caldwell deferred additional questions about the fire and how it started to plant officials.
