York County names new Emergency Management director

York County has a new official in charge of handling emergencies.

Chuck Haynes was announced as the new director of York County’s Emergency Management office at Monday’s meeting of York County Council.

Haynes is currently the director of Emergency Management in Pickens County, and previously served as a firefighter with the Rock Hill Fire Department. In between, the Cheraw native also held a post in the state’s Emergency Management office.

The top Emergency Management job has been vacant since longtime director Cotton Howell, who held the post for 30 years, retired at the end of June last year. In the meantime, York County’s public safety communications director Gary Loflin has doubled as the interim Emergency Management director.

Haynes will formally take over the position on Monday, March 23.
