3 displaced by early morning Newport fire

A family of three was displaced from a home on the 700 block of Museum Road in the Newport community early Thursday morning after a fire broke out in the kitchen and spread throughout the house.

No one was injured in the fire, but the flames spread into the attic and caused heavy smoke damage to the rest of the home, according to Newport Fire Chief Carl Faulk.

The fire broke out around 6 a.m. when a pot containing grease was left on the stove and ignited. The flames ignited the cabinets above the stove, spread into the attic and even broke through the roof, Faulk said.

Engines from Newport, Bethesda and Riverview fire stations responded to the home and were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes. Faulk estimated the damage to the home to be between $40,000 and $50,000.

A married couple and the man’s mother are being assisted by the American Red Cross with locating a place to stay.
