Lancaster fire displaces 7 on Sunday

Seven people are homeless after a fire swept through a mobile home near Lancaster on Sunday.

Firefighters at the Elgin fire station got the call around 11:48 a.m., and arrived to find smoke and flames billowing from the door and windows of a double-wide mobile home on Old Camden Highway, Lancaster County Fire Marshal Stephen Blackwelder said.

The first fire crew to arrive called for help when they realized they needed more manpower. In all, six fire stations ended up responding to the call, and the home was gutted by the blaze.

No one was injured, but seven people who had been living in the home are being assisted by the American Red Cross to find a new place to live. Blackwelder couldn’t specify the ages and relationships between the seven.

A Lancaster County sheriff’s investigator was called to the scene when firefighters were unable to identify a cause or point of origin for the fire. Maj. Matt Shaw with the sheriff’s office said Monday that investigation was ongoing.
