March 23 may be known on social media as “Puppy Day,” but at the Humane Society of York County, located in Fort Mill, every day is Puppy Day. And Dog Day. And Cat Day. Kitten Day too, for that matter.

Finding those animals good homes is a job Mary Beth Knapp, chairman of the board of the Humane Society of York County, takes seriously.

“We’re their voice,” Knapp said of the puppies the agency cares for, then adopts out to pet owners. “First, we want what’s best for the animal, and second, we want them safe.”

The Humane Society of York County can have any number of puppies, Knapp said, depending on the day. Right now, there are about 12, but several have pending adoptions. None get adopted “quickly enough,” she said, but many go in a matter of days after the agency publishes their photos.

Sadly though, 20 percent to 25 percent of adopted puppies are returned to the shelter for one reason or another.

“It’s like having a baby,” Knapp said.

They may be cute, she said, but they can be an awful lot of work.
