S.C. 5 near Rock Hill reopened after traffic accident

S.C. 5 reopened just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after being closed following a morning wreck that left a tractor-trailer overturned on the side of the road, according to the Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the collision happened between Sheraton Way and Mathis Road around 9 a.m. By noon, detours were in place and traffic was being diverted.

The wreck occurred around 9 a.m. when a 1999 Peterbilt tractor-trailer struck the rear of another trailer as the two vehicles approached Rock Hill on S.C. 5. When the first trailer put on brakes, the following trailer swerved to avoid rear-ending the truck, struck the vehicle’s rear left corner as well as a guardrail, and then overturned on the side of the road, said Lance Cpl. Gary Miller with Highway Patrol.

The driver of the overturned trailer, a 29-year-old man from Monroe, N.C., was wearing a seatbelt and emerged uninjured from the crash. He was cited by Highway Patrol for following too close. The 65-year-old driver of the first trailer was also uninjured.

It took troopers a little more than five hours to clear the scene after the collision.
