Catawbas remember ‘medicine man’ at memorial service

Members of the Catawba Indian Nation said goodbye to their former medicine man and U.S. Navy veteran John George Saturday.

Friends and family gathered at the reservation Longhouse for a memorial service where they listened to traditional Catawba music. Members of the American Legion Post 34 Honor Guard presented an American flag to George’s family.

The 71-year-old man died Monday after battling cancer.
