Golf carts and gold mines. Here’s how land could change across Lancaster County.
Lancaster County land use decisions coming to its planning commission Dec. 17 include two large ones involving Haile Gold Mine.
One decision would change the future land use designation of 51 parcels at almost 648 acres to allow future expansion at the gold mine. Properties are along Haile Gold Mine, Ernest Scott, Duckwood and Gold Mine roads.
Most of the parcels are vacant. Eight of them have homes on them. One has the Haile office building and parking lot.
Another decision would rezone 46 percels at almost 540 acres — much of it the same as the prior request — for inclusion in the Haile mine. According to the application, there aren’t plans to mine the properties. Instead the land will act as a buffer and store overburden, waste material like rock and soil.
Those items lead a long list. The planning commission will make recommendations, followed by decisions by Lancaster County Council. Here are the other items:
▪ A seven-acre site on U.S. 521, south of the Retreat at Rayfield, is up for rezoning. The plan is for commercial development there. A vacant home and mobile home on the property at 8513 Charlotte Hwy. would give way to a retail site selling golf carts.
Shriners Hospitals for Children owns the site now. A concept plan submitted to the county shows three separate buildings off U.S. 21. Two are 5,000 feet each. The other is 12,000 square feet. All are listed as office or retail. The concept plan show more than four acres remaining for future development.
▪ A three-acre site at 9330 Charlotte Highway in Indian Land is up for rezoning to allow for a daycare. The property has a house on it now. The property owner had a rezoning request turned down in September.
According to the application submitted to the county, a national daycare franchise has a letter of intent to develop the property. The vacant land would become part of the 79-acre Indian Land Wastewater Treatment Plant.
▪ A three-acre site needs rezoning to allow expansion of the sewer facility at 7864 River Road.
▪ A small piece of property could rezone to combine with one beside it for a two-acre business site off Williams Circle. The plan would expand the Stash N Dash storage facility.
▪ Another request would rezone almost two acres and combine it with a smaller property for owner Pleasant Dale Baptist Church.
