York County museums have their director. Here’s who’ll lead Brattonsville, other sites

The Culture & Heritage Commission has its new executive director, and it’s a familiar face.

Richard Campbell took over Aug. 6 as acting executive director of the museum group that includes the Museum of York County, Main Street Children’s Museum, Historic Brattonsville and the McCelvey Center. Campbell now takes the role in full.

“We have been thrilled with the work Richard has done since stepping in as acting executive director and could not be more thrilled that he was willing to take on the position,” said Penny Sheppard, commission chairwoman.

Campbell served as director of business, marketing and operations since 2011.

The museum director has several ongoing projects, from extensive renovation at Brattonsville to continued repairs at the downtown children’s museum in Rock Hill after it suffered extensive water damage.

In August, a five-hour commission meeting led to Campbell’s promotion to interim director while the former director took another role with the museum system. Cary Tilley arrived in 2012, replacing Van Shields who worked as executive director for 15 years prior. The director position manages a staff of about 50 employees and an annual budget of almost $5 million.

Culture & Heritage Museums dates back to the 1997 merger of the Museum of York County and York County Historical Commission. Facilities under the museum banner date back to the 1950s or earlier.
