Days and weeks after the holidays, gift-getters return unwanted items.

Even trees.

York County residents can return old Christmas trees to one of 16 collection and recycling centers throughout the county from Dec. 26 to Jan. 31, said Leslie Hatchell, recycling coordinator for York County.

Just two days after Christmas, a dozen or more fresh pine-smelling Frazier Firs were piled on the ground at the Eastview Center on Adnah Church Road. Residents will deliver more in the coming weeks.

“We feel like as people finish up their Christmas holidays and take down the decorations we will be seeing plenty more,” Hatchell said.

The trees will be ground into mulch for the York County landfill and other places. The county will not sell or give away mulch to the public.

“You can take your tree to the landfill, but this way, we’re taking it for you,” Hatchell said.

The county does not ordinarily accept yard debris at the recycling center. Residents must also remove lights and all decorations.

The recycling center also accepts other post-holiday throw-aways.

Residents can drop off artificial trees to be recycled for scrap metal, cardboard gift boxes, cooking oil and old electronics.

“This is a great one-stop shop,” Hatchell said. “Don’t take a holiday from recycling.”
