‘Blue Out’ in York County marks 2 years since deputy Mike Doty killed, 3 others hurt

Friday marks the second anniversary of the on-duty shooting death of a York County police officer.

On Jan. 17, 2018, York County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sgt. Mike Doty was shot in an ambush by a domestic violence suspect near York and later died. Three other officers, sheriff deputies Sgt. Randy Clinton and Sgt. Buddy Brown, and York Police Department Lt. Kyle Cummings, were wounded.

York County residents who want to show support and remember Doty can be part of “Blue Out” on Friday by wearing blue and lighting blue lights on the porch, in the windows and wherever, according to the sheriff’s office Facebook page.

The 809 Foundation also is teaming up Friday night with Hobo’s restaurant on Main Street in Fort Mill. Doty’s call number was 809. The 809 Foundation was created by family, friends and others to honor his legacy and raise money for causes Doty cared for.

Sheriff’s office employees held a prayer vigil in Doty’s honor Thursday night and will march from the sheriff’s office 8 miles to the scene of the crime on Saturday.

A 10K, 5K and fun run event in Doty’s name is March 14 in Fort Mill.

A video series about the incident created by the sheriff’s office called “The Many Heroes” can be seen at the sheriff’s office Facebook page.

Christian McCall pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder and is serving a life sentence without parole in a South Carolina prison.
