Heavy rain caused a wastewater spill in Tega Cay. Here’s what we know about it.

Heavy rain Thursday led to more than just water spilling in Tega Cay.

The city reported a wastewater spill that occurred about 5 p.m. Thursday at the 26000 block of Neptunes Landing. According to the city website, the spill was related to heavy rains that also caused power outages, road closings and localized flooding throughout the area.

“After investigating,” the city notice reads, “the (wastewater spill) was related to the amount of rainfall that had occurred throughout the day. The estimated spill total is 5,400 gallons.”

The notice also states the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified. A no swim advisory was put in place for the nearest cove. The city began taking samples Friday morning and will update the community when test results come back showing the water is safe for swimming.

While overflows once were common with heavy rains in Tega Cay, even leading to the city buying the former Tega Cay Water Service in 2014, they’ve become rare in recent years. The DHEC site listing spills shows only four in York County in the past year. One each came in Fort Mill and Tega Cay, two in Rock Hill.
