80-year-old Charlotte woman killed by falling tree during storm in York County

An 80-year-old Charlotte woman has been identified as the driver killed by a falling tree in York County during Thursday’s storms.

Gertrude Meyer died at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after the tree fell on her 2010 SUV on Pleasant Road, said Sabrina Gast, York County Coroner.

Meyer was driving northbound on Pleasant Road in Fort Mill when the tree fell on her vehicle, Gast said.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. between Fort Mill and the North Carolina state line, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The incident happened on a day when severe weather brought rain, wind and tornadoes to the region. Officials have not said if severe weather played a part in the wreck.

Meyer’s death was one of two in the Charlotte region during the storm, the Charlotte Observer reported.
