Rock Hill postpones parks programming, including sports center’s grand opening
All of Rock Hill’s parks and recreation registered programming for children and adults have been postponed until further notice, according to an announcement from the city.
The news was released after 7 p.m. Friday, at the end of a week in which local and national events were canceled or postponed due to the threat of coronavirus, which is also known as COVID-19.
All registered programs will be postponed, and so will a few special events — including the grand opening of the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center that had been scheduled for next Thursday.
The center, a multi-million-dollar complex that will reportedly generate $10 million of the $30 million to $40 million estimated annual economic impact from Rock Hill-owned sports facilities, held its first event in December but hasn’t been open for public use.
Movie Night at Northside Recreation Center, which was scheduled for next Friday, has also been postponed indefinitely.
Tournaments that were previously planned may continue, depending on the event organizer, city spokesperson Katie Quinn said.
City parks and recreation centers will remain open, Quinn said.
Rock Hill’s Parks, Recreation & Tourism department maintains more than 1,250 acres, including 31 parks and four recreation centers, according to its website. The city is a renowned hotbed for sports tourism.
