Harris Teeter boosts hourly pay for its workers with a ‘Hero Bonus’

Harris Teeter is bumping up all hourly workers pay with a “Hero Bonus.

The Matthews-based grocer is giving employees in its retail, distribution center, dairy and corporate office a $2 “Hero Bonus,” according to an online statement posted this week.

The rate will be applied to hours worked April 1 through April 21.

Harris Teeter previously said it would provide a one-time bonus to all hourly associates, which pays out Friday, April 3. That was a $300 bonus for every full-time associate and $150 for part-time workers.

“The Hero Bonus is one more way to convey our gratitude, not only to our existing associates but also to the more than 2,800 new hires who have joined the company and the additional 2,300 associates who will soon join the Harris Teeter family,” said Rod Antolock, president of Harris Teeter.

Coronavirus safety steps

Along with enhanced cleaning at common areas, Harris Teeter is installing Plexiglass shields at registers and counters at all stores and adding floor decals to promote social distancing throughout the stores by Friday, April 3.

The company said it also is ”working to procure” protective masks and gloves for workers.

The grocer also is offering workers emergency paid leave, financial assistance to workers directly affected by COVID-19 through its Fred J. Morganthall II Foundation and providing mental health services.

Harris Teeter has hired 2,800 workers and is hiring 2,300 more. Apply at myhtcareers.referrals.selectminds.com.
