Racial justice rally set Sunday for city of York to honor memory of George Floyd

A rally to unite the community and protest the police killing of George Floyd is set for Sunday in the city of York, S.C.

The event will feature several speakers including local ministers, young people, York Mayor Mike Fuesser, York County Sheriff, Kevin Tolson, and York City Police Chief Andy Robinson.

Steve Love, York City Council member and Western York County NAACP chairman, said the rally’s theme is “A.C.T.” — which stands for accountability, communication and trust.

“We’re putting it on so the York community can come together,” Love told The Herald.

The gathering will be held in the parking lot of the York County Administrative building on South Congress Street, across from what was the Coal Yard Restaurant and Lounge, which closed last month.

It will begin on Sunday at 4 p.m.

York has a long history in protesting for racial justice, Love said. The city has hosted unity marches and protests after several national events, including the Charleston shooting in 2015. Floyd died in Minneapolis after being arrested by police, one of whom kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes.

The rally will come after many peaceful gatherings in York County just this week — including marches in Rock Hill and Fort Mill, and a unity gathering in Chester.
