Woman, 89, dies in York County house fire near Rock Hill, officials say

A woman died Monday in a house fire in York County near Rock Hill, according to sheriff deputies and fire officials.

Margaret Webb Trent, 89, was unable to get out of the house during the fire, according to York County Sheriff’s Office deputies and York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

The fire at 834 Springdale Road remains under investigation, said Lesslie Fire-Rescue Department Chief Tommy White and sheriff’s office deputies.

The area is east of Dave Lyle Boulevard and the Rock Hill Galleria near Interstate 77 at Exit 79.

The area is just east of Rock Hill’s city limits. Rock Hill Fire Department, acting as mutual aid, sent two trucks and firefighters to assist, Deputy Chief Mark Simmons said.

York County Sheriff’s Office deputies closed area roads around the site for several hours before the area reopened late Monday night.

Because the fire has a fatality, the sheriff’s office detective division investigators and the State Law Enforcement Division fire team will be involved in the investigation, officials said.
