Chester animal shelter temporarily closed after seizure of dogs fills available space
The Chester County Animal Shelter has been temporarily closed because all space is filled after a seizure of dogs, county officials said.
The shelter is working to determine the best course of care for the shelter’s animals after 30 to 50 dogs were taken into county custody from a rural property near Fort Lawn in eastern Chester County, said Shane Stuart, Chester County supervisor.
No date has been set to re-open the shelter to the public, Stuart said.
Stuart’s office oversees the Chester County Animal Care and Enforcement unit and animal shelter.
Officials with the animal unit, assisted by Chester County Sheriff’s Office deputies, served a search warrant on the property Monday during an ongoing investigation, Stuart said.
Around 50 dogs of mixed breeds were on the property, according to a sheriff’s office report.
No charges have been filed, said Grant Suskin, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
This is a developing story.
