One of the biggest coming attractions in York County, maybe ever, now has a name
One of the biggest recreation projects ever in York County now has a name.
The 1,900-acre land preserve on the Rock Hill side of the Catawba River, until now known as Riverbend Park, is now called Catawba Bend Preserve. The new name replaces a working title since the county bought the property in late 2018.
Prior to to the sale, the property deal was codenamed Project Destiny.
The county recently approved a master plan for the site -- along the river, off the end of Neely Store Road. The site will have miles of riverfront trail, biking, camping, fishing, paddling and other nature-based amenities. The site has drawn numerous comparisons to the Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill.
York County leaders envision a $52 million investment during the next 15 years. That money will be a mix of local, state, federal and private funding.
Eventually the site will have an event center and education area. There will be playgrounds and a luxury motor coach park. Construction on a park loop road and five-mile paved walkway along the edge of the Catawba River will begin next summer.
The coming park isn’t alone in its incorporation of the Catawba name. Tega Cay has its own transformative park that’s been in the works for more than a decade. It will have ballfields and community gathering space. It will have trails along the river. That project is known as Catawba Park.
