Person from NC walking along I-77 in York County struck and killed, troopers say
A person from North Carolina walking on Interstate 77 in York County was killed late Thursday after being struck by two SUVs, officials said.
The fatality happened around 9:30 p.m. on I-77 southbound near mile marker 89, south of the North Carolina state line, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The person who was killed was age 21, from Marshville, N.C., in Union County, Ridgeway said. The person died at the scene, Ridgeway said.
The identity of the person killed has not yet been released by the York County Coroner’s Office.
The drivers of the two vehicles involved were not hurt, officials said.
Two of the four lanes of I-77 southbound near the incident site were closed for a few hours and traffic was diverted through the nearby South Carolina Welcome Center. York County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted at the scene.
The pedestrian fatality is the 144th in South Carolina in 2021, according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
The highway death is the 40th in York County in 2021, public safety statistics show.
