This ‘beloved property’ in Lake Wylie has goat farm, farmers market and more
Another prime property in Lake Wylie is going public.
York County announced Wednesday the Bethel Lake Wylie Preservation Park District bought the almost seven-acre goat farm at 3972 Hands Mill Highway for $1.4 million. The sits is on S.C. 274 and 49 near the Five Points intersection, at the entrance to Bethelfields.
“The Bethel Lake Wylie Preservation Park District has closed on possibly the most beloved property in the area,” said York County Councilwoman Allison Love.
Love said the property will allow a farmers market and community garden. Without the preservation district purchase, she said, likely commercial or residential development would have come to the site.
A house and barn are on the property now. The Currence family will move to a new location in coming months.
The goats will move with them. As of Wednesday morning county land records didn’t show a sale of the property since 2007. In 2008 the last of the cattle at the farm were sold to make it exclusively a goat farm.
The sale comes after the recent purchase of the 87-acre Van Every property on S.C. 557. The preservation district bought that site with plans to convert it to an event space and art gallery, with hiking and other public uses.
The conservation district formed last year when Lake Wylie voters approved the new tax to create revenue for land preservation.
