Person pulled from Catawba River in Rock Hill near I-77 bridge; 2nd rescue in 2 weeks
A person was rescued from the Catawba River in York County by Rock Hill firefighters, officials said.
The river rescue Wednesday night near Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 bridges is the second in the area in two weeks.
The person was located before 9 p.m. Wednesday on a log calling for help about 75 yards from the Riverwalk river access site, said Capt. Ben Grant of the Rock Hill Fire Department. The fire department sent two swift water rescue kayaks, then firefighters secured the person from the river, Grant said.
The person was cold but alert, and given medical treatment, Grant said.
The area where the incident happened is where Rock Hill and Fort Mill are separated by the river. Bridges on U.S. 21 and I-77 span the river near Riverwalk. It is about 8 miles from the North Carolina state line with Charlotte.
York County Emergency Management Director Chuck Haynes said fire, law enforcement and medical responders went to the scene.
On Dec. 16, Rock Hill firefighters and York County Sheriff’s Office deputies and dive team rescued a man after he jumped from the I-77 bridge into the river, The Herald reported. He was rescued from a boulder in the river by Rock Hill firefighters in kayaks.
